A world of music....music to the world small logo

Alun Hoddinott CBE (1929 - 2008)

Alun Hoddinott died on March 12th 2008 following a long illness and a prolonged stay in hospital.

Alun believed very strongly that Wales needed its own music publishing industry in order to both safeguard existing works and to both encourage and promote new ones. Alun Hoddinott was the prime force behind the formation of Oriana Publications and was a staunch supporter during our first twelve years of existence.

Alun was a kind, gentle, generous man with an incredible intellect and a love and appreciation of the Arts in their widest sense. He had a heart as big as a house and truly was, in Peter Pears' words, a Father Christmas of a man – the world is a poorer, darker place for his passing but we are all enriched for having known such a wonderful man.

All of us at Oriana will miss Alun Hoddinott greatly and will never forget the debt that this company owes to him.

Cysga yn dawel Alun.

Oriana returns to full operations

Following the trials and tribulations of the last two years, Oriana Publications has returned, phoenix-like, to full operations. Having planned for a two week hiatus to allow for our move from Cardiff to Barry we have been beset by problems which have included the building work in our office which took six months longer than planned, the subsequent explosion of our main drains (nice!) which meant putting all our stock and equipment into storage whilst the drains were excavated and the office re-built, and, finally, the necessary replacement of our computer network.

We have endured the tests of the past twenty four months and apologise to all of our customers for the less than satisfactory service that they may have received during this time. Oriana is now restored to full operational fitness, with a new website which we hope to further develop in the coming months, and we will strive to maintain the high standards which we originally set out to achieve.

Oriana to launch new imprints Oriana is shortly to launch two new imprints to cater for specialist markets.

The first new imprint , Serian, will cover lighter original works for brass ensemble (from trio up to brass band) as well as arrangements of existing works.

The second imprint, Aneira, will be specifically for works written or arranged for male-voice choir.

These two imprints will start to appear over the next few months and catalogues will be available shortly.

Grace Williams Centenary Edition The first publications in the new Grace Williams Centenary Edition will be released in the Autumn of 2008.

The edition is the result of a collaboration between Oriana, the Grace Williams Estate, Ty Cerdd-Music Centre Wales and the Welsh Music Guild.

The first works to be published, all edited by Graeme Cotterill of Bangor University, will be the First and Second Symphonies and the Missa Cambrensis. These will be followed, in 2009, by Ballads, Carillons, Fairest of Stars and several chamber works.

"An Angelus" premiered at GregynogWalford Davies' An Angelus was premiered at this year's Gregynog Festival, 68 years after its composition. An Angelus was composed at Gregynog Hall, Powys in August 1940, seven months before Walford Davies’ death.

The premiere was part of the final concert of the festival which was given by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales directed by Lesley Hatfield.

Works chosen for competitions and examinations Two of Alun Hoddinott's works - the Euphonium Sonata and the Trombone Concerto - have been chosen for inclusion in the Trinity Guildhall diploma syllabus.

Also, Iddi Hi composed by Guto Puw, has been included as a set piece for the 2009 National Eisteddfod of Wales.
